High Roller Lures I use |
|||||
As many of you know, I am a top water addict. To me there is nothing better than the excitement you feel when watching a fish bust a top water plug. I tell people all the time that they haven't caught a redfish or tarpon until they have done it on a surface plug. So if you want the excitement of only a top water plug can give you, make sure you have a High Roller tied on the end of your line. Remember when lures were not only made to catch fish but to last? That's what High Roller has done. They have made a top water plug that will out fish other lures not only with their action but with the number of trips you can make with one you have to put a few of these top water plugs in your box. They may cost a few dollars more than the top water plugs you find at the discount store, but I promise you they will out last any plug on the market. High Roller lures are hand made for fisherman, not mass produced for discount stores. Here are a few of my favorites. The top water plug I use more than any other is the 3.25 Rip Roller. This lure is an incredible surface plug. When twitched the prop on the back spits just enough to attract just about everything on the flats. We have caught trout, snook, tarpon, jacks and redfish on them. When the fish are deep or the water is a little murky this top water plug drives them nuts. This is also one of the best lures I have ever used for gator trout and snook. The 4.25 Rip Roller is by far one of my favorite top water plugs to use in the surf. There is just enough weight to this plug to cast out past the breakers. It is also a great tarpon and snook lure. There is nothing better in life than a tarpon busting top water.
This is a great "walk the dog" lure. It isn't the typical walk though. This lure looks more like a bait fish trying to skip away instead of the splashing from side to side other top water plugs make. Most of the time I use the 3.25 High Roller, but on those days the fish are feeding a little farther away the 4.25 High Roller will make up the distance. This is also a great top water plug for larger trout. You can cast it far enough that the fish don't even know you are on the flat. Another great thing about this plug is on days when reds are a little shy this lure will still draw a strike when other top water plugs wont. This is also a great flat water plug. It has just enough action to entice the fish but is still quiet enough not to spook them. If you love walking the dog as much as I do, this lure is a must.
Remember the good-old-days when there were only two top water lures in your tackle box. I know the only top water plugs I used were a spook and a chugger. Within the past 20 years it seamed imposable to find a good chugger like we use to throw. Well, High Roller has the answer to my prayers. Their Chug Roller is one of the best top water poppers I have ever used. This lure will call snook out of the mangroves and drive trout crazy. Fishing this lure is like stepping back in time.
Here are a few of my favorite colors.
Not all soft plastics are made alike. High Rollers fingerling is proving to be one of the most unique lures I have used. Unlike most soft plastics that just act like a bait swimming through the water, this on actually looks like one too. From the epoxy jig head to the life like action this lure draws the strike. The other thing that makes this shad imitation stand out is the ability to change the body out without having to retie a new grub on. For me this is a big plus because I can spend more time fishing and less time changing out lures. For the fishing I do I prefer the 3 inch Fingerling in Black/ Gold in their 1/4 oz. The gold isn't overpowering so it looks more like a mullet to me. Once again this isn't the cheapest soft plastic on the market, but when you look at the number of fish you'll catch with it compared to other lures their price is well worth every penny.
