Tarpon Fishing in Cocoa Beach Florida

On the Beaches the Tarpon start to show up on the beaches around April or May and are here until around November depending on how cool the water is. Most of these fish run between 50 to 150 lbs. The peek time to fish these big boys is between May and June. When they are on the beaches most of the fishing we do for them is in 20 to 40 feet of water.

These fish are a blast on light tackle or fly. Most of the fishing I do for them is with ether a spinning rod with 15 lb mono or a 10# fly rod.

When we fish with spinning I prefer to throw top water plugs if they are feeding hard. On the days they are a little slower to eat I use suspending lures or grubs. However when things are real slow I will carry live bait. I can tell you I haven't had to throw bait at a tarpon in over 12 years but always have it for a back-up.

When it comes to throwing fly I use a lot of the same tactics I use with spinning. I have to use top water poppers if there is a chance. If this doesn't work I go straight to the old reliable Tarpon Flies.
