Description: terminal mouth, slender body, small scales; last dorsal ray not elongated; head small and pointed.

Similar Fish: juvenile tarpon, Megalops atlanticus.

Where found: INSHORE fish, in bays and estuaries; occasionally enters freshwater, occurring in tidal pools and canals; often forms large schools and harasses bait at the surface.

Average size: 2 to 3 pounds.

Florida Record: 6 lbs., 10 ozs.

The ladyfish (or poor mans tarpon) is one fish in this area that has been overlooked as a game fish. This fish, like its larger cousin the tarpon, loves to give a great fight for its' size. Ladyfish also love to spend a lot of time in the air making this fish a blast to catch on light tackle and fly.
